Original story: A man fleeing from Boynton Beach police in a chase Saturday afternoon lost control of his car and struck a 5-year-old standing on the sidewalk along Miner Road in Boynton Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reports.
Lex Lugard Eugene, of Boynton Beach, told police he “lost control” of his 2008 Buick and went onto the sidewalk at the northeast corner of Miner and Summit roads, the crash report says. The crash happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday.
It isn’t clear why Eugene fled from police, but the report says officers were following him eastbound on Miner Road just before the crash.
Eugene’s Buick struck the 5-year-old boy, Jayden Readon, and continued into a fence. Readon was taken to Delray Medical Center where he later died, the sheriff’s office reports.
The sheriff’s office does not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, the report indicates.
Eugene abandoned the car after the crash and ran, the sheriff’s office reports.
Boynton Beach police later caught him.
Eugene faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving without a valid license and leaving the scene of a crash.
He is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing Sunday morning
